Since the beginning of the armed conflict in 2015, many families from different governorates have been displaced from one region to another, leading to a difficult life full of security risks and the risk of starvation due to extreme poverty.
Hadramout is one of the governorates of Yemen that has many conflict-affected areas with displaced civilians.
A large number of these families were living in poverty even before displacement.
Like Mansoor Mohammed who is 41 years old, born and raised in Taiz. But difficult living conditions and war prompted him to move from one place to another seeking a source of income.
He left his home five years ago to live with his family as IDPs. And Saleh who lives with his family in a hut in Wadi Amed.
He spends his days collecting scrap from the shops and/or streets then sells it to the traders which provide him a daily income averaging 1000YR i.e 1.2 USD.
He suffered very much trying to find a place to live with his family to protect them from the heat of the hot sun in the daytime and severe cold at night, but he could not as a result of his severe poverty due to the condition of the country.
But the hardest thing is affording to put a meal on the table for his family. Saleh did not have enough food to meet him and his family’s most basic needs. Hence, the food aid provided by the FMF and financed by the World Food Program (WFP) saved him and his family from the imminent hunger.
After securing the necessary food for his family from the monthly assistance provided by the program, he was able to save money from his scrap collection work.
And after a year of saving up, he was able to purchase a second-hand motorcycle at a reasonable price that helped him move and collect more scrap metal.
Which increased his income, allowing him to buy some of the necessary household items that his family simply couldn’t afford.
Saleh hopes that this assistance will continue so that he can protect his family from hunger and also help secure a decent, and safe life.
