The food security project protects the dignity of a disabled person and his family

Since the conflict began in mid-March 2015, the food security and nutrition situation has rapidly deteriorated.

The conflict has destroyed people’s livelihoods and their ability to purchase food, making it difficult for many Yemenis to meet minimal food and nutrition needs.

The vicious circle between poverty, food insecurity, and malnutrition in Yemen continues its alarming upward trend with 60 percent of the Yemeni population not having access to sufficient, nutritious food to live a healthy life.

Some 17 million people are still food insecure while a staggering seven million people do not know where their next meal is coming from and are at risk of famine.

Acute food insecurity is expected to increase further if no immediate funding and scale-up of emergency food and livelihood assistance programs are introduced.

Ahmed Musad Muthana is a 60-year-old man who is working as a craftsman and living in Alhabileen city. He is the head of a poverty-stricken family that consists of thirteen members.

Ahmed suffers from a disability rendering him unable to use his legs, which puts his family in a difficult position to secure their food needs; especially given that he is the provider of his family.

The family lives in a small hut in one of the slums of Al Habilain city. The roof of the structure is made of straw, and the walls are made of collected tires from nearby waste piles.

Despite the hard living conditions that Ahmed and his family are suffering from, he was willing to meet the FMF-WFP teams and welcome us into his hut with a big smile.

Ahmed said to our team that “poverty denied all my children from education because I was unable to provide the cost of uniforms and other essential supplies for school. I used to work as a craftsman and it was the main source of income to feed my family”.

He added “It was so hard to get enough food on the table for my family by selling porcelain during the war, and it hurt me badly to watch my family suffering from hunger.

However, since the food security project started and we have become one of the beneficiaries, our living conditions drastically improved.

By receiving the food basket every month, we were able to save some money, which we used to spend on food, to open a small shop and sell the basic needs for other poverty-stricken families nearby”.

He went on to say “I am so happy that my family can now eat three times a day, and I could provide my family with other basic needs. I am also thrilled that my grandchildren are now able to go to school like other children, which will allow my grandson Shokry to realize his dream of becoming an engineer in the future”.

He concluded his talk with us by expressing his gratitude to the WFP & FMF teams by stating, “Thanks to the WFP and FMF teams for saving our lives and the future of my grandchildren. I hope that the support for the people in suffering will continue, especially during this hard time that we hope will soon end for the sake of a better future for future generations”.
